Double sided story-telling painting, in gouache, of the 'Paithan' type, illustrating a narrative from the Mahabharata. 2007,3014.47 is on the reverse. The children report Rohidas' death. The leaf is divided in two sections: to the right, the Brahmin is served his meal by Taramati. He sits opposite a small table on which is a bowl with food. In his left he carries a water jug and with his right he lifts some food to his mouth. Taramati's attention, however, is distracted by the arrival of three very excited children who, with dramatic gestures, tell her of Rohidas' accident. The shifting of mood between the quiet inner room and the excitement in the verandah is beautifully conveyed.
